Dr. Johannes Rieckmann

Dr Johannes Rieckmann holds a degree in economics and studied at universities in Bremen and Paris. He received his doctorate in development economics from the University of Göttingen. After working for management consultancies in Hamburg and Brussels, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Development and Security Department of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).

From 2015 to 2024, he was a Senior Research Fellow at BIGS. During this time, he dealt with economic issues of telecommunications and cyber security, as well as the economic costs of extremism and violence against emergency services. He also dealt with regulatory policy in connection with the provision of protection by public and private service providers, improving the resilience of the cash supply in the event of a crisis, and the economic impact of disinformation campaigns in social media.

Other areas of focus and interest include the development of data-driven approaches to the detection of corruption in public procurement and contracting procedures, the quantitative analysis of the impact of politically motivated crime, and export control. Dr Rieckmann remains closely associated with BIGS as a non-resident fellow.
